On October 12, 2022, Deputies Nicole Lyons and Tony Nunez responded to a family disturbance in Davenport. An estranged husband was banging on woman’s house in an attempt to get inside, but when the deputies arrived, the suspect was gone. While speaking with the victim, the suspect returned.
The deputies approached the suspect outside near the end of the driveway. He backed away while keeping his hands behind his back, refusing orders to show them. Deputy Lyons was armed with her Taser, while Deputy Nunez was holding his firearm.
Suddenly, the suspect brought a handgun around and fired at the deputies.
Deputy Nunez was struck once in the chest, but returned fire. The suspect immediate dropped his gun and cowered on the ground, uninjured.
Both deputies secured the man in handcuffs. At that time, Deputies Nunez and Lyons began checking to Nunez for any injury.
Nunez’s bulletproof vest and a St Michael medallion stopped the suspect’s round from entering his chest.
Deputy Toney Nunez remained focused and calm in this highly stressful situation in which he was shot in the chest, and is hereby presented the Medal of Honor.
Deputy Nunez and Deputy Nicole Lyons are also both being presented the Life Saving Medal due to their efforts likely saving the lives of the suspect’s family.
Deputy Nicole Lyons was hired as a Telecommunicator in 2000, and she became a deputy sheriff in 2026. Her husband Jeffrey is a Master Deputy in the Department of Detention. Deputy Harodis "Tony" Nunez was hired in 2007 and has received numerous awards in the last six years.
