Over a 10-hour period on October 13, a cloud of gas tethered above the surface of the Sun, then rose up and broke apart. The video was produced with a combination of two wavelengths of extreme ultraviolet light. Prominences are large gaseous features bound by magnetic forces. An erupting prominence occurs when they become unstable and burst away from the surface.
