Vampires and Other Outcasts

Vampires, outcasts, grey-skied beachfronts, cults, castles, secrecy, death and laughter. The films of Jean Rollin sit uneasily amongst horror films because with one or two exceptions, they are something else, something dreamlike and bizarre.

There's not much I can say about the films of Jean Rollin that hasn't been said more eloquently elsewhere. And sometimes, I feel, it is better not to say anything at all. I've seen heads nearly explode when I speak of my life for these films... The same people who will excuse the worst flaws in more moneyed directors making more traditional films seem unable to tolerate the aspects of Rollinades they see as silly. This is fair enough. But I always feel Rollin has the quality of the best surrealists. He makes no claims to artistry. He simply makes films that mirror the serials he saw as a child and the dreams that obsessed him. I speak of him as if he is still with us because, in so many ways, through these films, I feel that he is. I can sense the laughter and joy I saw in so many interviews (even while he was having dialysis treatment). These are tiny clips, moments which barely hint at the films that they are excerpted from and I have taken liberties in the hope that the originals will be sought out and enjoyed...
