Many people don’t realize they have an easily treatable psychological problem that a psychiatrist can fix. In this video, Robert D McMullen, MD, of New York City reviews how to know when your problems are severe enough to see a mental health professional. Dr. McMullen has been working with Psychopharmacology for 35 years along with Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS). He studied at Georgetown University and completed his residency at Columbia Presbyterian.
The biggest sign to look for when deciding whether to see a psychiatrist is whether or not the problem is interfering with your life. Are you having trouble finding or keeping a romantic relationship? Are you having trouble finding a good job or getting promoted at that job?
For example, many patients who are college students and find themselves getting even a little depressed can fall behind in their studies because studying while depressed can become a huge burden. A very small problem in psychiatry can lead to major problems in your life.
An anxiety problem can make it difficult to go outside or to travel on crowded subways. Social phobia affects about 5% of the population. This condition can make being in crowds or meeting new people very difficult. Going to a job interview with this condition can be an enormous challenge.
Many people don’t realize they have a problem. They think these fears and anxieties are common to most people. The only way to know if your fears are common are to talk it over with others, like a mental health professional. If in doubt, get an evaluation. Consider seeing a psychiatrist first. Medication can quickly correct many problems. Psychologists often want to treat a patient with psychotherapy, which can take much longer.
