Day 6 - Static Entrances
Day 6 of Yellow Kimbers Handstand Challenge is my most favorite part about handstands – being able to go from standing on your feet, to standing on your hands, with as much control as possible. Never stops feeling like magic. Ever. There are so many pieces that go into making a static entrance to a handstand possible, there are really too many to cover in a single IG post. Everyone will struggle with different parts of it, without realizing that the pieces that are easy for them are completely inaccessible to someone else. I won’t tell you that presses aren’t significantly easier if you are very flexible, or very strong. The principles of balance are the same for everyone though – physics doesn’t play favorites. TODAY’S BIG TAKEWAY: That forward lean is your friend. A handstand press is a transfer of weight distribution from over your hips, to over your hands. It will take entirely too much strength to get up and over if you don’t first get as much of your weight over or past your wrists as you can. And this is where the principle of Balance from day 1 comes back in for the win. Your hands, your arms, are what are going to keep you from toppling forward as you shift your weight up and over your hands. For each inch you lean forward, each inch that your center of mass creeps closer to your wrists, the more your arms need to resist that weight shift in order for you to end up on top of them. Lean with your lower body, and fight that lean with your arms, letting your torso pivot around the shoulder joint until your legs can push you into position. Also ABS.
