What is better brick, hebel or cladding for your new home.
Why is the industry changing?
You might have noticed that the price of building a new home in Australia has gone up considerably. This change has resulted in builders opting for alternative building methods,
The most notable change is on what they use for the outside of your house.
With the increase in demand for housing, and already low supply of qualified bricklayers this has created an increase in price for labor. Which then in turn has moved builders who would traditionally only offer Brick as a standard to now offering other alternatives.
HEBEL
What is hebel? Well it's a mixture of cement, water, lime and small amounts of aluminum and sand. This is all mixed in with an expansion agent which creates a chemical reaction and forms air bubbles. Much like the reaction of yeast in a bread/cake.
The result is an extremely light product, about 80% lighter than traditional concrete.
Lets look at the benefits of Heble:
Well if you ask a builder they like the fact it only takes 2 people half a day to put up the panels. So speed is a benefit, maybe for the builder
The thermal properties of Hebel are really good. This then translates to a more energy efficient home
Most panels are made from recyclable material
Creates a rendered finish to your home
So what the the disadvantages of Hebel:
Hebel being a lightweight material you cannot mount anything to the walls that are heavy. The main one that comes to mind are split system air conditioning units and clothes lines
Panels need to be painted which requires upkeep
Even though the Hebel process was invented in 1945 by Josef Hebel it was only introduced by CSR to the Australian building industry in 1990’s and wasn't until more recently that the product caught on as being a good alternative. The problem here is that we don't know how this product will stand the test of time.
Now let's talk about Brick:
Well bricks have been used in construction for a very long time, 8300 BC to be precise. There has been a natural evolution of the process of making bricks over the time but the fundamentals are exactly the same.
They are made up of ground clay and water. This mixture is then formed into shapes and dried to create a brick.
What are the benefits of having a brick home:
Its a tried and tested product so you know it will stand the test of time.
Has great thermal properties, this has come about through evolution and depending on the climent the design or structure of your brick will be different.
Brick walls don't need much maintenance
It's sustainably produced which means that it has a low carbon footprint
What are the disadvantages
Well its labor intensive to install, this means that in the current market its expensive
Many people don't like the look of bricks so they opt to have it rendered
A face brick surface will be rough so over time they can get moldy
And finally lets talk about Cladding
Cladding fundamentally means the process of placing one material over the other. There are many cladding options in the market. James hardie is the primary supplier of cladding materials in Australia. Many of their products are made from Fiber Cement.
What are the benefits of Cladding:
You have many different styles you can choose including wood, brick veneer and metal.
Many cladding options are lightweight which means that there is less effort to install, which is why its so popular on double story homes.
Fire Resistant up to BAL 40
Have been developed for Australian weather conditions
What the disadvantages
Cladding can be difficult to repair, depending on which option you choose you may end up having to take down a whole wall to fix a problem.
The cladding itself does not have thermal support, you will need to invest in good insulation in the wall cavity.
It can be a long installation process depending on which material you have selected.
