My name's Dr. Sandlin Lowe. I'm a neuropsychiatrist. Well, anxiety is one of these words that has many meanings to people. There are different kinds of anxiety syndromes. Some people have real physical manifestations of anxiety and these are the people that tend to have panic attacks. There'll be certain physical manifestations of that anxiety. People who are anxious tend to have an overactive thalamus and basal ganglia, both the left and right basal ganglia. They also tend to have a very active anterior cingulate cortex. This is the part of your brain that obsesses and ruminates over things. The overactive parts of the brain you want to treat, you want to calm them down and that's one of the things we can do with the transcranial magnetic stimulation.
We're able to actually see those regions with the fMRI and then we can use the TMS to calm them down. So a lot of people have treatment-resistant anxiety, similar to treatment-resistant depression. They often go together. And once you've exhausted talk therapy, and medications, and supplements, and nutraceuticals, then I think getting personalized transcranial magnetic stimulation would be an excellent option. We do an fMRI of your brain. We're able to see the different networks and the dysfunctional networks, and then we target them with this very sophisticated targeting system. In people who have the kind of physical, somatic complaints of anxiety, you'll see that those begin to really decrease. In people who tend to ruminate and obsess more about being anxious, you'll see that that decreases also, and then this gives them tremendous hope and confidence as we continue the treatment.
