Many cancer patients experience loss of their appetite, this can result from:
Cancer itself that causes release of inflammatory and chemical substances in the body. Which decreases the appetite.
It can be a side-effect of cancer treatment.
It can a result of other symptoms such as pain, fatigue, nausea, vomiting, mouth soreness, taste changes or difficulty swallowing.
Stress and anxiety.
Sometimes it happens as a result of other medications as pain medications.
How to cope with appetite changes:
Maintaining weight is very important for any cancer patient, as poor nutrition affects treatment response, quality of life and it can also limit options for treatment.
Do not avoid eating, instead take smaller but more frequent meals.
Schedule an alarm for your meals, and try to drink lot fluids in between meals instead of during meal time, as they take the place of important nutrients.
Choose high protein and caloric food for your meals, and carry protein-rich snacks where ever you go; examples are cheese, crackers, dried fruits, nuts, pudding and ice-cream.
Avoid irritant, spicy or fatty food.
Eat whenever you feel hungry and eat what you enjoy.
Fruit juices and smoothies having high caloric and protein value are really useful, easy and tasty ways to gain nutrients.
If you suffer from nausea, take your anti-emetic medications on time.
Daily light exercise can help boosting your appetite.
Keep yourself hydrated by drinking fluids and water.
Nutritional supplements may also be prescribed by your doctor, can supply you with many nutrients but can't be a substitute for eating well.
When to call your doctor:
If you have any symptom that contributes to your appetite changes as uncontrolled pain or difficulty swallowing, nausea, vomiting, mouth soreness, anxiety, or fatigue.
If you note any sign of dehydration as fainting, dry mouth, dizziness on standing, and reduced amount of urine.
If you didn’t eat for more than a day.
Your doctor can prescribe some drugs as steroids or cannabinoids to improve your appetite, or consult a dietitian. Hospitalization for feeding is sometimes required in more severe cases.
