When is the Closure Segment coming? Mid-May flyover of the Gordie Howe International Bridge Project as of May 15, 2024
This video is packed with great shots of the project and the skilled workers making it a reality. I’ve incorporated bright sunny day and awesome night footage of the bridge and skyline, so watch till the end.
Only 26 meters (85 feet) remaining to connect the two sides over the Detroit River, the bridge deck is nearly complete. This gap is about the same width as an official NHL hockey rink.
The project team anticipates the bridge deck will be fully connected by the end of June 2024! That’s longer than most of us anticipated. I suppose we will still have to wait and see who picked the closest date in the community comments.
Overall construction on the $6.4 billion bridge project is progressing steadily, with completion planned for September 2025 and the bridge opening to traffic expected in Fall 2025. This represents a 10-month delay from the original contracted completion date.
Construction of the bridge deck itself began in December 2022, and by March 2024 it was two-thirds complete with only 139.5 meters (457.6 feet) left to construct across the river. The better-than-expected winter weather in 2023-2024 allowed work to advance at a good pace.
The Gordie Howe International Bridge will be the largest bi-national border crossing between the U.S. and Canada. It will provide a direct highway-to-highway connection linking the U.S. interstate system to the Canadian highway network via the Herb Gray Parkway in Windsor.
