🎵I've been fascinated by Janis Joplin for a while. Maybe fascinated isn't the right word....but, perplexed. I've yearned to understand her...psychoanalyze her if you will... and understand how someone like her could come out with a rendition of Ball & Chain and Me and Bobby McGee that just hits people in their souls right where it hurts. A common reaction I get when I mention Sam Andrews or Janis Joplin from folks is "Oh, I wasn't really a Big Brother fan." or, "Yeah, not really a big fan of Janis Joplin." These reactions always peaked my curiosity further...because then I'd say...well what about the song Me and Bobby McGee ?? or Piece of my Heart?? or Ball and Chain ??? and then people would always reply with, "Oh, I love those songs. Just nothing else". So what else is there to Janis? I never anticipated making a roots on her, but I've scoured through hours and hours of her interviews over the years and recently was in someone's kitchen when I saw an old vintage photo of her on the wall. Seeing that photo of her reminded me of these rabbit holes of interviews I've gone through over the years and so when I got a few requests about her in my emails, I finally thought, you know what, it's time. So in today's Roots Rockumentary we are digging up the Roots of Janis Joplin and deep diving into her psyche, mind and soul.🎵
