Former Congress President Rahul Gandhi has responded to the notice sent by the Lok Sabha secretariat to vacate his official bungalow in Delhi by April 22. In his reply on Tuesday, Gandhi stated that he will abide by the details contained in the letter, without prejudice to his rights. The notice was sent to him as he is no longer the leader of the Congress party and is not entitled to the bungalow under the Members of Parliament (MP) Act, 1954.
Gandhi, who is a Z-plus protectee, has been residing in the 12, Tughlaq Lane bungalow since 2005. The government had earlier granted him an extension to stay in the bungalow after he lost his constituency in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. However, with the change in his status as the Congress leader, he is required to vacate the premises.
The bungalow has been allotted to Gandhi based on his status as an MP. As per the rules, an MP can continue to occupy a bungalow for a maximum of one month after the dissolution of the House or the member's term expires, whichever is earlier. Gandhi was given an extension to stay in the bungalow as he was the leader of the Congress party. However, as he is no longer holding the position, he cannot continue to stay in the bungalow.
This move by the Lok Sabha secretariat comes after the Central Government had recently evicted six former Members of Parliament from their official residences in Lutyens' Delhi for overstaying their allotted time. The government had taken the decision to recover its property after a committee headed by the Union Housing and Urban Affairs Secretary found that these ex-MPs were staying in their official bungalows even after their entitlements had expired.
As per reports, after the notice was sent to Rahul Gandhi, several Congress leaders had raised the issue and urged the government to allow him to continue residing in the bungalow, citing his security concerns. However, with Gandhi himself abiding by the notice, it remains to be seen where he will shift after he vacates the bungalow.
In conclusion, Rahul Gandhi's decision to abide by the notice and vacate his official bungalow has put an end to the controversy surrounding his continued occupancy of the property. With several other former MPs also being asked to vacate their official residences, it is clear that the government is taking steps to ensure that the entitlements of public representatives are not misused.
