"I think that both sides, not just the Georgians nor just the Russians, must put pressure on solving this conflict themselves and that the EU can act as an intermediary. The tensions cannot be allowed to grow and grow and grow and it is not in the interests of neither the Russians nor the Georgians. I am sure that the EU can play a very important role."

STORYLINE
European Union foreign ministers appealed to North Korea and Iran on Tuesday to return to negotiations to resolve standoffs with the international community over their nuclear programs.
Their discussions came amid reports from Japan and South Korea that Pyongyang may be preparing a new nuclear test, a move which would further destabilise East Asia.
Iran rejects claims made by the United States and others that it is using its nuclear program to develop nuclear weapons.
