The Brusio Spiral viaduct is another signature landmark of the Rhaetian Railway. This is located on the Bernina section of the line which connects St. Moritz to the Italian town of Tirano. This is also a part of the UNESCO World Heritage list. It is quite close to Tirano, next to the village of Brusio. The spiral was made because the railway had to cover the height difference to get from the side of the mountain to the valley floor in a very short distance, and the maximum gradient of the line had to be kept at 7%, which was already quite steep. So they made the spiral loop, of which the viaduct is a part. The bridge has 9 stone arches and the loop has a radius of 50-70 metres. It was really great to witness this, you can have a look at the coverage in both directions.
