Tajik is a variety of Persian spoken mainly in Tajikistan, and also in Uzbekistan, Afghanistan, Kyrgyzstan, China and Kazakhstan. The Persian language in Tajikistan was renamed Tajik by Stalin in 1932 in order to distance Persian speakers in Central Asia from Persian speakers in Iran.
The Tajik language has been written in three alphabets over the course of its history: an adaptation of the Perso-Arabic script, an adaptation of the Latin script and an adaptation of the Cyrillic script.
