Moxie Marlinspike, the founder of encrypted comms app Signal Moxie Marlinspike, has warned about the use of Telegram as a form of secure communications, as Ukraine makes heavy use of the app in the midst of war with Russia. On Twitter, Marlinspike said that advertising had promoted Telegram as a secure app, when in fact all communications and contacts are stored in a database that could easily be targeted by Russia. He warned that Moscow could target Telegram employees in Russia to get access to that database. “If Russia doesn’t want to bother with hacking, they can leverage family safety for access,” Marlinspike added. Elon Musk, billionaire Tesla founder, chimed in to ask Marlinspike: “Are you sure Signal is secure?” Marlinspike responded: “Signal is designed very differently. All communication is e2ee [end-to-end encrypted], so there is no cloud [database] with everyone’s entire plaintext [message] history in it. Groups are encrypted by default, so the only [people] who know group details are the people in them. Same [with] contacts, calls, social graph, etc.”A Telegram spokesperson said: “This kind of FUD [fear, uncertainty and doubt] is not surprising, coming from a minor competitor (and typical for this one). That said, we can confirm that we have neither developers nor servers in Russia and we don’t see any of the mentioned risks.” For those who want to use the app, Telegram does have a “secret messages” feature that promises more security. Telegram remains popular due to its ease of use and effective group chats that provide stable broadcast channels. In recent days, various Ukrainian government officials and agencies, from military to security departments, have used Telegram, alongside other social media channels, to get word out about ongoing events, from cyberattacks to on-the-ground invasions into different cities. Calls have also gone out across the platform, as well as Facebook, for civilian hackers in Ukraine to help defend the nation and hack back against Russians. The lack of complete end-to-end encryption on Telegram - an app founded by Russian billionaire Pavel Durov, though based in Dubai - has long been known. Alan Woodward, an encryption expert at the University of Surrey, said he “wouldn’t trust Telegram.”“The crypto is home grown and they have never held it up for public scrutiny. Quite the opposite for Signal and WhatsApp. The other thing you can see about Telegram is the amount of metadata it generates.” That metadata includes logs of “who talks to who, when and for how long, plus some other ancillary data that can easily track and identify users. Signal doesn’t do this. WhatsApp does do some of it, which is why I prefer Signal,” Woodward added.
