Panchkarmas, out of the 5 karmas, the vaman, basthi, virechana, basthi, nasya, raktamokshana. Basti is considered as one of the most important panchkarma in Ayurveda. Why so? We have 3 types of energies, vata, pitta and kapha. Vata is a dosha which is mobile. Pitta and kapha , they get aggravated by vata. In any disease, vata plays a very important role and the main treatment for vata is basti. Basti is considered about 50% of the total treatment. Vata has about 80 types of diseases. Basti has the capacity to eliminate all the vata oriented diseases. Basti is the different types of enemas that are given through the anal route. These enemas are made of kashayam or oil or ghee or milk. Basically the basti is of 2 types. One is the niruha basthi, that is of decoction and the next is of asthapan basthi that is of ghee. niruha basti is for vata oriented diseases. Asthapan basthi is also the same where you have to give some strengthening to the tissues, muscles and bones. Diseases that can be controlled by basti is backache joint pain, any type of psoriasis, the small inflammatory diseases, the gouty arthritis, the synovial membrane effusion. All this can be controlled by basti. Basti means something which can be hold. So when the oils and the other kashayas are hold by the bladder in basti. So this is the basti treatment in Ayurveda.
