"The Supreme Court vs the Govt: This tug of war between the judiciary and the govt has been going on for the past two months. The govt has been dropping hints of its objection to continuation of the collegium system for the appointment of judges whereas the Judiciary on its part is resolutely defending it. Last week the vice president Jagdeep Dhankhar spoke about the matter and said that in a democracy Legislature has to be Supreme.
Now, in a latest escalation in this tussle, Union Law Minister Kiren Rijiju has written to Chief Justice of India D Y Chandrachud “suggesting” to include a government nominee in the decision-making process for shortlisting of judges. This may lead to beginning of a fresh row between the two.
