Hi guys, today’s video is for the people who wondered how the type of strings affect the sound when using a pickup. This time i’m comparing bronze strings 80-20 (Martin gauge 12s) and Thomastik (nickel flat wounds gauge 13s) on the 1936 Gibson L5 with its floating vintage DeArmond Mike.

Theoretically nickel strings are supposed to work better with pickups, but i get pretty interesting results with bronze strings too on my vintage deamond floating pickups (maybe it works better than more modern pickups with bronze strings because something they did when conceiving them, as many people used bronze strings back in the 40s and 50s… it’s just a though, but i have no clue so don’t hesitate to drop a comment if you know more about that).

Another video showcasing the sonic difference between these 2 difference type of strings (with the same mike, amp and pick) will be posted in the future on the channel, but on a slower standard to show more chords and less single note soloing. These gear videos don’t generate as many views as regular videos, and imply more edit work for me but hopefully it will be helpful to some of you guys. And anyway the gigs that were supposed to start again from January 15th In France have been postponed for several extra months so you could also tell me that i have nothing better to do...

I’m playing Bud Powell’s « Celia », which i re-discovered in a movie called « Chico y Rita ». I’m plugged into a 1969 Fender Princeton Reverb amp, using a Dunlop 1.5mm purple pick, and the sound is captured by the Neumann TLM 103.
