2. Download & Extract the firmware running on your Galaxy S20, S20+, S20 Ultra [02:39]
3. Copy the "AP" firmware file to your smartphone [04:28]
4. Download and Install the Magisk Manager application [04:42]
5. Open the app after it's installed [05:03]
6. Tap the "Install" button at the top right [05:27]
7. Choose the "Select and Patch a File" option [05:32]
8. Browse to and select that "AP" firmware file from Step #3 [05:37]
9. Now tap the "Let's Go" option at the top right [06:04]
10. Wait for the Magisk Manager app to work its magic
11. Then copy the newly created "magisk_patched" file from the Galaxy S20 back to the PC [07:02]
12. Boot the Galaxy S20 into Download Mode [07:34]
13. Download the vbmeta_disabled file
14. Flash the vbmeta file to the USERDATA section with Odin [08:27]
15. Wait for reboots, and then confirm the factory data reset [10:05]
16. Boot the Galaxy S20+ into Download Mode again [11:34]
17. Flash the magisk_patched file, BL, CP, HOME_CSC firmware files, and the vbmeta file as instructed [12:10]
18. Wait for the Galaxy S20 Ultra to boot back into Android 15:01]
19. Activate Android like normal [15:32]
20. Download & install Magisk Manager [16:23]
21. Open Magisk Manager and confirm the additional setup process [17:00]
22. Once rebooted again, confirm root status [18:05]
Now that Android 11 has rolled out and the developer community has had time to test things, I can recommend that we root the Samsung Galaxy S20, Galaxy S20+, Galaxy S20 Ultra, and Galaxy S20 FE.
This tutorial requires that you have ALREADY unlocked the bootloader. I have covered this in a previous tutorial so check that link above to get caught up. Once you're ready though, we can begin by downloading required files such as Odin, the disable vbmeta patch, and the firmware that matches your CSC region code.
Extract the files from that firmware you just downloaded so that you can copy the file that begins with AP to the smartphone. This is needed so we can open up the Magisk Manager application and patch it with the required binaries to gain root access.
We then need to copy that patched_magisk.tar file from the smartphone over to the PC.
Then you can boot the Samsung Galaxy S20 into Download Mode (using the USB method) so that we can flash the vbmeta TAR file via Odin. This is required in order to boot any modified images (e.g. the modded boot.img needed for Magisk) on the smartphone.
You'll see the S20 has rebooted into Recovery Mode so that we can perform the Factory Data Reset (required). Confirm using the hardware buttons and then wait for it to boot back up.
It will take a while since we just did the factory data reset. Just wait and the phone will boot to the Android activation screen. Power the phone down from here so that we can boot the phone back into Download Mode again.
Now we can flash those firmware files (beginning with AP, BL, CP, HOME_CSC, and that vbmeta file) using Odin. Be patient and maintain a solid USB connection through the process.
Odin will display another "PASS" message (if everything went smoothly) and the Galaxy S20, S20+, S20 Ultra, or S20 FE will reboot automatically.
Once we activate Android and log into our accounts, we can download the Magisk Manager application again so that it can perform the required setup tasks.
This will reboot the Samsung Galaxy S20 one last time and it's here that you have finally rooted the smartphone and gained root access.
This will work for ANY S20 series that you can unlock the bootloader. I've included a list of models below.
