Arlene Foster, Northern Ireland's first minister, felt she was left with no option but to resign.
She will step down as leader of her Democratic Unionist Party at the end of next month and as First Minister at the end of June.
She was losing support among the DUP over a number of issues, notably the consequences for Northern Ireland of the Brexit trade deal.
