California Governor Gavin Newsom sought a federal disaster declaration as the first of two back-to-back storms brought heavy rains, flooding rivers and evacuation warnings across a state battered by months of extreme weather.
The request to President Joe Biden comes after Newsom declared a state of emergency in more than half of California’s counties, some of which are still recovering from deadly flooding in January or last month’s blizzard.
The so-called atmospheric river now lashing the state is channeling warm, moist air from south of Hawaii, melting snow and swelling rivers. The storm, which started in Northern California Thursday, swept through the agricultural-rich central valley overnight.
