"Joshua Fought the Battle of Jericho" refers to the seige described in Joshua 6, paralleling the victory Joshua and the Israelites achieved in Jericho with their trumpets to the victory this black spiritual inspired through song.

She explained later in the concert that she hurt her thumb and that is why it is bandaged up like it is.
