The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Shavendra Silva WWV RWP RSP VSV USP ndc psc MPhil, attended a retrospective honouring the late famous singer C.T. Fernando, held at the Ananda Samarakoon Studio at Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation (SLBC) on 21 August.
The event titled ‘Nomiyena Minisun: C.T. Fernando Mathakawarjanaya’ was held in honour of the remarkable life and achievements of the late singer and composer C.T. Fernando. It highlighted his profound impact on the Sri Lankan music industry, during the 1950s to 1970s. To pay tribute to his enduring legacy, the event featured performances of his iconic songs, allowing the audience to relive and appreciate the timeless contributions he made to Sri Lankan music.
During the occasion, the compere made an unscheduled invitation to General Shavendra Silva to share his thoughts on the late singer. In accepting the invitation to honour the eminent singer, the CDS remarked that C.T. Fernando's legacy is truly immortal, as his songs continue to captivate and resonate decades after his passing. He noted that you would not find an event where a C.T. Fernando song is not sung, whether by elders or the youth. Additionally, some of his songs, such as "Hela Jathika Abhimane…" have become integral to School Bands and are also played by Armed Forces Bands in almost all their performances. At the end of his speech, the CDS was again requested to sing a C.T. Fernando song and, as a heartfelt tribute, he honoured the late singer by performing one of his most famous songs, "Mee Amba Wanaye…" to the delight of the attendees.
