(18 Jul 2021) Hundreds of Iraqis protested in the capital Baghdad on Sunday to demand an end to impunity.
The protesters held posters of activists killed recently and marched from al Andaluz Square to Tahrir Square in the centre of the city.
On Friday, Iraqi police arrested a suspected gunman in the killing of a prominent public commentator whose slaying sent shockwaves through the country.
Iraq's prime minister declared that with the arrest his government had fulfilled its promise to bring the perpetrators to justice.
Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi tweeted the development: "We promised to arrest the killers of Hisham al-Hashimi. We fulfilled the promise."
The state Iraqiya TV station broadcast footage of the suspect, showing him confessing to his purported crime. The man identified himself in the video as Ahmed Hamdawi Al-Kinani, a police officer with the rank of first lieutenant in the Interior Ministry.
It is not unusual that officers and officials in Iraq have connections to militias working without or with the state's endorsement. The government has struggled to reign them in, partly because they are so entrenched within the state structure.
The High Commission for Human Rights reported nearly 35 activists have been killed in Iraq since an anti-government protest movement swept Iraq in October 2019. There have been nearly 82 attempted killings since them.
Many expect the killings to continue as Iraq plans to hold early elections in October, which had been a key demand of anti-government protesters.
