A celebratory trip quickly turned frightening for two West Australian students when their attempt to get high ended in gunfire.
The Sydney Morning Herald reports that Australians Toben Clements and Jake Rovacsek were drinking in a Bourbon Street bar in New Orleans around 4 a.m. on Wednesday when they approached an unknown black male to buy drugs.
The two university students followed the man to a dark-colored four-door sedan, where a driver was waiting inside. The driver took them to Algiers on the west bank of the Mississippi River and told them along the way that the drugs cost several hundred dollars. The two did not have money available and told the man.
When the car stopped at the corner of L.B. Landry Avenue and Shepard Street, the pair alighted from the vehicle and were approached by a third man, who demanded money. When they couldn’t produce any cash, the man shot them and fled in the sedan. One student was shot in the stomach, while the other sustained a gunshot wound to the chest. Both were brought to the hospital for treatment and are now in stable condition.
Authorities are investigating the incident and are on the hunt for the three men involved in the crime.
