You Really Got Me is a song by the British rock group The Kinks, written by band leader Ray Davies and included in the album Kinks (1964). Released as the group's third single in January 1965, it reached first place in the English charts the following month to stay for two weeks. Built on the powerchord, it was not only the breakthrough hit for the band but also became a symbolic song of the British invasion.
You Really Got Me will heavily influence contemporary rock musicians, especially punk rock musicians. In fact, this was recognized as one of the first prototypes of a hard rock and punk rock song.The song was recorded in several styles in the summer of 1964, before achieving the ideal sound. The group was under tremendous pressure from the record company Pye who demanded a hit, given the failure of their previous two singles. Ray Davies in fact insisted a lot with the management and the label to obtain the time and money necessary to develop the sound and style of the song. Dave Davies had grown tired of the traditional "clean" guitar style of the time; and set out in search of a more powerful and aggressive sound, which he accidentally found by drilling his Elpico brand amplifier (nicknamed "little green amp"): «I started to feel really frustrated with the sound of my amplifier, and I said: I know what to do! I'll fuck you! I took a Gillette razor blade and cut... [from the center up] the amplifier... so it was all cut but still functional, still intact. I tried to play and the sound that came out seemed fantastic!". The particular sound of the perforated amplifier was replicated in the recording studio; the Elpico was replaced with a big Vox AC30, and the result was a powerful, distorted effect that became the trademark of the early Kinks.
According to Ray Davies, the song's distinctive riff emerged while the group was working on the chord sequence for The Kingsmen's Louie Louie. Although in 1998, he said: «I wrote You Really Got Me as an homage to all those great blues musicians that I loved: Leadbelly and Big Bill Broonzy». His brother Dave Davies, however, reported that the track was inspired by listening to Jimmy Giuffre's The Train and the River. The Kinks' use of distorted electric guitar riffs continued on songs such as All Day and All of the Night, Tired of Waiting for You, Till the End of the Day, and Set Me Free, among others. The Who's Pete Townshend stated that their first single, "I Can't Explain", intentionally had an "early Kinks" sound.The guitar solo in You Really Got Me has always been the source of one of the most controversial and persistent urban legends in rock history. It has often been claimed that it was not Dave Davies who played it, but the then young session man Jimmy Page, who would later join first The Yardbirds and then Led Zeppelin. Among those who reported that Page played on the song was Jon Lord of Deep Purple who also said he played piano on the track. Page has always denied having played the solo in the song, even going so far as to state the following in an interview from the seventies given to Sound on Sound magazine: «I never played on You Really Got Me, and that was exactly what pissed off Ray Davies."
Shel Talmy, producer of the track, declared during an interview with the Finding Zoso blog: «I mean, Jimmy Page didn't play the solo on You Really Got Me, I've said it five thousand times but people still believe it. The reason I used Jimmy on the Kinks recordings was because Ray didn't want to play guitar and sing at the same time. In fact, Jimmy played rhythm guitar." Subsequently, Talmy reiterated the concept during an interview with The Guardian: «Contrary to legend, Jimmy did not play on You Really Got Me».
