Cremona, 1734: for Antonio Stradivari, the most creative time of life as well as his worldly existence were coming to an end after a long and intense journey. The violin maker was about ninety; a few years earlier, in 1729, he had personally wrote his last wills and had purchased the family tomb from Francesco Villani’s heirs in view of his own burial. It has recently been supposed that the death in 1727, at only twenty-four, of his son Giovanni Battista Martino - the son who would have been the one to inherit his father’s workshop considering the advanced age of his brothers Francesco and Omobono - might have led Antonio, two years later, to prepare his own departure. Surely an attractive hypothesis though lacking documentary evidence. In 1729 and 1730 the workshop’s activity decreased; in those years, the instruments’ labels were printed in a larger type and a narrower form began to be used for the construction of cellos.
Francesco’s style was more and more visible on the instruments: the Lam ex Scotland University is one of the violins clearly showing the work of Francesco who, in those years, was taking up an increasingly significant role in the workshop. The production of those years appears to be discontinuous for quality and choice of materials, sometimes local maple wood.
The violin was probably made using the “G” form which was donated to the Town of Cremona by the luthier Giuseppe Fiorini together with the collection of Stradivarian artefacts. According to the Hills, the violin’s name originated from the fact that, at the beginning of the 20th century, the instrument was donated to a Scottish University by George D.N. Neill, an amateur violinist who also owned another Stradivari, the violin Tyrell dated 1717. Between 1963 and 1969 the Rembert Wurlitzer firm sold the violin no fewer than four times: to Louis Schrade, Jerry Castellone, dr. P. J. McGlynn and Mrs. Mildred Sainer In 1972, once again through the Wurlitzer firm, the Lam ex Scotland University was bought by the important US collector Sau-Wing Lam.

Cremona, 1734: l’esistenza terrena e la grande stagione artistica di Antonio Stradivari stanno compiendo gli ultimi passi di un lungo ed intenso cammino. Il liutaio ha circa 90 anni; qualche anno prima, nel 1729, aveva provveduto a scrivere, di suo pugno, il testamento con le sue ultime volontà ed aveva acquistato dagli eredi di Francesco Villani la loro tomba di famiglia pensando alla propria sepoltura.
Studi recenti hanno avanzato l’ipotesi che la morte, nel 1727, a soli 24 anni, di Giovanni Battista Martino, quel figlio che avrebbe dovuto raccogliere l’eredità paterna considerando l’età avanzata di Francesco e Omobono, abbia spinto Antonio, due anni più tardi, a preparare la sua dipartita. Ipotesi indubbiamente suggestiva ma priva di qualsiasi prova documentaria. Negli anni 1729-30 si avverte un rallentamento dell’attività della bottega; nello stesso tempo gli strumenti presentano una
nuova etichetta con caratteri più grandi e, per la realizzazione dei violoncelli, si inizia ad utilizzare una forma più stretta. La presenza del figlio Francesco appare sempre più tangibile nella costruzione degli strumenti: il Lam ex Scotland University è uno dei violini in cui è evidente l’aiuto di Francesco, che, progressivamente, assume un ruolo sempre più significativo all’interno della bottega. In questi anni la produzione appare discontinua per qualità così come per i materiali utilizzati: talora viene impiegato acero di provenienza locale. Costruito probabilmente utilizzando
la forma “G”, donata con gli altri cimeli stradivariani alla città dal liutaio Giuseppe Fiorini, il violino deve il suo appellativo, secondo gli Hill, al fatto di esser stato regalato, all’inizio del XX secolo, ad una Università scozzese da George D.N. Neill, violinista dilettante e proprietario di un altro violino di Stradivari: il Tyrell del 1717. Tra il 1963 e il 1969 la ditta Rembert Wurlitzer vendette il violino
non meno di quattro volte, a Louis Schrade, a Jerry Castellone, al dott. P. J. McGlynn e infine a Mrs. Mildred Sainer. Nel 1972, ancora tramite Wurlitzer, il “Lam ex Scotland University raggiunse l’importante collezionista americano Sau-Wing Lam.
