Rolls-Royce Avon Mk 1 Aero Engine
Development of the Avon began in 1945. It was Rolls-Royce's first axial-flow jet engine. All jet engines work by compressing air, then burning it to create hot gas, Axial flow engine's use a series of fans to compress the air in stages. The air is then channelled into the combustion chamber and out of the engine via the turbine. You can see the fans, or compressors, in the cutaway section of this engine.
