Drawing on lessons learned from Cote d’Ivoire, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, as well as broader international perspectives, this session will examine the role of elections in democratic transitions and consolidation, identify some of the key challenges to democratic elections on the continent, and highlight some elections-related best practices within the democratic and peacebuilding process. The session will also address the roles of internal and external players in fostering support for democratic elections, and offer recommendations for improving and safeguarding the integrity of elections in Africa.
