Here's the low-down on the protection I wear when mountain biking and bikepacking. Certainly, if I was 30 years younger I wouldn't wear all this gear but at my age injuries take too long to heal.

I can remember in 2001 having a massive shunt at Donington Park on my R1 on a trackday, I was bruised black and yellow from the tips of my toes all the way up to my chest. I was 39 then, and I remember going to work the next day, a bit stiff, but I didn't think any more of it!! Now, that accident would probably have killed me!
