The traveling carnival that was the tour by Modest Mouse and Pixies (& Cat Power!!!) touched down in Chicago's Salt Shed for a couple of sold-out shows on August 30 and 31 of 2023. I've been lucky enough to see all bands a couple of times but these shows were years in the rearview mirror. A Pixies show is a barrage of awesome. Many of the old hits are still there but the new stuff is still remarkably solid. Personally, "Monkey gone to heaven" and plenty of "Doolittle" is a must. "Gouge away" to start things off was amazing and served notice that the band was in fine form and looking great. I wish there was a bit more "Bossa Nova" love ("Dig for fire", "Hang wire", "Rock music"...). But so many good songs and so little time.
My first time seeing the band with Paz on bass and while Kim will always be my first love, Paz was excellent. Frank Black looked fearsome in black duds and it was beautiful to see Joey and David. This band is not going away any time soon and I cannot wait for my next fix.
p.s. Get out there and see these bands and support them!
