The State Of Roundhouse Studios | Xbox Game Studios Deep Dive

Welcome to Episode 11 of my State of Xbox Games Studios series and I hope you’re having a great day. For episode 2, we looked at Compulsion Games, Xbox’s most mysterious internal developer. For episode 11, we’re looking at the most mysterious developer that came over from the Bethesda acquisition. Roundhouse Studios. They might have the most fascinating history out of all Xbox developers, but unfortunately, it’s for all the wrong reasons. You see - Roundhouse was created in 2019 by Bethesda, after being reformed out of the ashes of a developer called Human Head Studios. At the time of creation, Human Head and Roundhouse had the exact same staff in the exact same office. What makes the story even more interesting is that Human Head was still a very much active developer when it shut down. In fact, Human Head developed a game called Rune II on November 12th, 2019, the day before it closed its doors. On November 13th, Roundhouse Studios was born under Bethesda’s umbrella in one of the strangest moves ever seen in the games industry. Why did this happen? Let’s get into it.
