It’s that time of year! Time for cheer, holiday cards, and fabulous red everywhere! In this video, I’m going to share how I captured one of my holiday card images using a DIY set and 4 different strobes for a poppy holiday shoot!

Concept:
Every year I set aside time to create several themed images that I can use on holiday cards and for seasonal self-promotion. I try to create images that represent my style and are eye-catching. The idea is that not only are they great to share on social media and to spread holiday cheer, but also to catch the eye of my current (and hopefully future!) clients.
For the concept of this holiday season, I wanted to create something a bit more commercial, poppy and colorful. To make the shot more interesting I decided to create a set using my favorite color (red!) without spending a lot on props. I purchased about $40 worth of red holiday boxes online and a couple of red bows to add to the mix. My team and I spent quite a bit of time (probably 15+ minutes) arranging the boxes into just the perfect composition to fill the frame and surround the model.
Once the set was built and the model in a red dress (of course!), it was time to build in the lighting. Let’s take a look at our 4 light setups.
Light 1: Magnum Reflector
I selected a Profoto Magnum reflector as the main light on the subject. This hard light modifier would create the contrast and saturation I wanted for this image. The goal was to create something more high key and with a commercial feel to it (like an advertisement), so this hard light modifier would give me the pop I needed.
Light 2&3: Small White Umbrella
With just a single strobe the background appeared very gray and unappealing. Instead, I wanted a pure white and clean background for this shot. To illuminate the background I added a strobe with a small white umbrella to both sides of the background (Savage Universal Super White). I made sure that they were both equal power, equal distance, and bright enough to light the background white without creating an overexposed haze. You can do this with a light meter or just watch your histogram/preview.
Light 4: Medium Umbrella with Diffusion
The three lights were close to achieving my original concept, but I felt that the image had too many shadows and dark areas. The goal was to create something upbeat, high key, and with minimal shadows. For this reason, I added a medium umbrella with diffusion centered on the frame. The only job of this light was to add fill to the shadows across the entire frame!
Bringing it all together:
Of course, then you have to bring it all together! The model’s pose, the movement of her hair, the careful placement of her hand… all were essential to ensure the success of the shot! I shot with the Canon R5 and the Canon RF 24-105 (my favorite camera-lens combo) because it allowed me to adjust my compression and framing to get just the right composition with the boxes filling the frame around my beautiful model. I hope you like the results!
Happy Holiday’s Everyone!
