This castle dates back to the 1420, a country house residence of Sir John Forbes and his wife Lady Marjorie Preston. However only the original ruins of the Preston Tower can be seen today. In the 1580’s William Forbes, a laird in Aberdeenshire rebuilt the castle and most of what remains can still be seen today. William died in 1586 and the estate was handed to his son, also called William the 8th Laird.
The Castle stayed in the Forbes family until 1718 when the 11th laird, William Forbes was evicted from his family home and that marked the end of Tolquhon Castle as a residence of gentry.
The estate was eventually purchased by the earl of Aberdeen and was inhabited as little more than a farmhouse until mid 1800’s when it fell further into decay. In 1929, the Earl of Haddo entrusted it to State care. It is well looked after by Historic Scotland and is an interesting castle to visit.
