There is no need to press clutch every time you press the brake pedal. You only press clutch when you switch gears, put the car into neutral speed or come to a stop. Whenever you break it is recommended to avoid braking in neutral speed. When you brake, you should combine engine braking with hydraulic brakes. There is a clutch safety switch which needs to be engaged in order for your ignition to work when you turn the key. It can only be engaged when you press down on the clutch pedal. This is to prevent you from trying to start the car while it's in gear. Just a safety feature they installed in cars a long time ago. It's not bad for the engine. The engine couldn't care less whether you downshift or not. But it's very bad for the clutch. ... And since clutches are more expensive than brakes, we don't recommend downshifting (unless, of course, you're descending a steep hill). When driving and coming to a stop sign, do I press both the clutch and brake at the same time before driving off? Just press your brake to reduce the speed of your car, and when it is about to stop, press on the clutch so as not to stall. Just brake without clutching, as the engine will help slow down the car.
