Description
Venezuela’s current economic and humanitarian crisis has historical roots going back to European colonialism. Colonialism created a very specific structure of power with a small group of white elites and a poor African and indigenous majority. After independence the elites established good relations with elite groups in the West, first Britain and then later the United States. This relationship between Venezuelan elites and the West was upset in 1998, when the population for the first time gained political power.
