In this video, Head Over Heels, released in 1989 for the Atari ST by Ocean.
In a far distant galaxy four worlds are enslaved by an evil emperor who came from planet Blacktooth. The neighbouring worlds, fearing invasion, send two spies to kindle revolution upon the enslaved planets, and recover the crowns that have been lost and that can free the planets.
These spies are Head and Heels, two separate creatures with different abilities, living in symbiosis; Head can jump twice his own height and glide through the air; he can also shoot doughnuts. Heels has legs that make him run faster and long jump; he's also capable of carrying things with him. When together, Head sits on Heel and they can join their skills. We start the mission with both Head and Heel, captured, separated and imprisoned in the castle headquarters of the planet Blacktooth. We must use all of their skill to keep their eight lives intact, and escape from the prison. Head and Heels can be moved independently in four directions when on the ground, and upwards by using their jumping abilities. To escape from prison we (Head and Heels) must pass through a series of rooms and corridors (no scrolling only fixed screens), filled with puzzles, obstacles and monsters.
Originally written for the 8-bit computers, Head over Heel has been superbly ported to the ST. The graphics are good, colored and the sprites are well animated while the audio is ok. The controls are a bit odd at first but once accustomed to them there's no dramas. The playability is high the puzzles are challenging and the difficulty is well balanced. The game require many hours of play in order to be finished and has more than one end sequence.
Here you'll find loading screens and gameplay.
All footage taken from original hardware machines and upscaled to 1080P.
