The vote exposed a deeply divided Conservative party, which is a disaster for the country. Andrew Marr explains why.

While Boris Johnson has declared victory and is now "burbling" about new measures to reunite the party, Andrew Marr says the confidence vote - and the resultant split in the Conservative party - effectively ends Johnson's 80-seat parliamentary majority, leaving the Prime Minister the leader of a minority Brexit party of steered by pro-Johnson Brexiteers and ideologues. Meanwhile Johnson is relaunching his Premiership with plans including tax cuts and resurrecting Right to Buy which are untenable - while others are simply trivial.
Despite the assertions of Johnson loyalists like Nadine Dorries and Jacob Rees-Mogg, Andrew Marr believes Boris Johnson finds himself in a situation most similar to the end of the Callaghan era in 1978. Then, the Labour government were at the end of their power, with rising inflation, industrial action and economic hardship. Then, Margaret Thatcher presented a new vision for the country and galvanised support around her. Can today's Labour Party under Keir Starmer bring the same level of steely resolve and philosophical direction that would be needed to usurp Boris Johnson's Conservatives? Whether they can or not - Andrew Marr makes the case that big change is coming once again in British politics.
