In this video, we take a look at the new monster helm set Kjalnar's Nightmare, which drops from the new dungeon in Harrowstorm: Unhallowed Grave. This monster set has the potential to be a new set for magicka DPS to wear when they are unable to run Zaan or Grothdarr due to range limitations.
Kjalnar's is a bit complicated. It's stronger on some classes than others, and part of that is due to the nature of each class.
For magdens, Kjalnar's is pretty strong, since magdens get 10 percent additional Magic Damage from their Piercing Cold passive.
For magcros (and possibly magsorcs), Kjalnar is pulling about even with Ilambris. Ilambris is used on these two classes because they have a source of Shock Damage that is not dependent on running a Shock Enchant. Ilambris ends up pulling just slightly ahead, though it is still within margin of error. I'd probably use Ilambris where possible due to the additional cleave, but Kjalnar is a guaranteed hit, so this may end up being more of a personal preference choice.
For all other classes, Kjalnar doesn't seem as strong as two-piece crit sets (this is wearing two different monster set pieces with Spell Crit as the 1-piece bonus e.g. Zaan + Slimecraw). It deals respectable DPS, but just doesn't seem to be able to match the output that two-piece crit is able to provide. However, since these tests were done on a trial dummy with 100 percent Major Force, it is certainly possible that, after adjusting for more realistic uptimes, Kjalnar ends up being about even or slightly ahead of two-piece crit.
In summary, I'd say that Kjalnar is a set that I would recommend farming for if you're a magicka DPS. It's a solid monster helm set that is competitive with two-piece crit on most classes. If you play magden, then definitely grab this set. For other classes though, this set is an optional bonus to have if you're tired of running two-piece crit.
