The National Medical Commission (NMC), India's apex medical education regulatory body, is considering a new policy that would allow Foreign Medical Graduates (FMGs) to receive a waiver for extended internships by undergoing a six-month medical practical skill examination. This proposed policy aims to assess the clinical skills of FMGs through a practical exam. If an FMG passes this test, the NMC will waive the remaining tenure of their Compulsory Rotatory Medical Internship (CRMI). This policy proposal came in response to the dissatisfaction expressed by FMGs regarding an NMC circular dated June 7, 2024, which suggested extending the existing internship tenure by 12 months. The new policy could offer a compromise for FMGs who were disappointed by this potential increase.
