The church refers to people, not a building. The very first church community of Christendom was in Jerusalem. Is it possible that this very first church in Jerusalem consisted of a bunch of communists? The Book of Acts describes the congregation as a wealth-sharing community. Everybody surrendered their worldly possession to the church and seven deacons would distribute the wealth so that all needs would be met. ( That seems to be a mean curveball to the free-market enthusiasts who think that modern capitalism is God’s preferred economic system.)
