Penn State Stroke Center named Comprehensive Stroke Center by The Joint Commission - AGAIN!
In the United States, two types of certification for Stroke Centers are Primary and Comprehensive. Although there are many Primary Stroke Centers, there are far fewer Comprehensive Stroke Centers that meet the distinguished criteria. Penn State Hershey is one of seven healthcare facilities in Pennsylvania, and the only one in Central Pennsylvania, to achieve status as a certified Comprehensive Stroke Center.
Comprehensive Stroke Center Certification recognizes those hospitals that have state-of-the-art infrastructure, staff and training to receive and treat patients with the most complex strokes. A Comprehensive Stroke Center also has 24/7 neurosurgical availability along with a dedicated Neuroscience Intensive Care Unit for stroke patients. While a Primary Stroke Center must have neurosurgery access within 2 hours. If the stroke is too complex, the patient will likely be sent to a Comprehensive Stroke Center for treatment.
Penn State Stroke Center is now one of less than a hundred healthcare facilities in the country to achieve status as a certified Comprehensive Stroke Center. Congratulations to the outstanding stroke team on a job well done!
