Spaghetti Westerns are Italian-made Western films that emerged in the mid-1960s. The term was coined by journalists because they were produced by Italians, and often directed by them, but set in the American West, and made for export.
The term was initially used pejoratively by critics who saw them as a cheap imitation of Hollywood westerns.
However, the popularity and commercial success of these films ensured their continuation, so they became an established subgenre of the Western movie genre. In fact, they were often produced as low-budget remakes of Hollywood movies with similar titles or themes.
Spaghetti Westerns, also known as Italian Westerns or Euro-Westerns, are a subgenre of the American Western film that emerged in the mid-1960s in the wake of Sergio Leone's Dollars Trilogy (also known as The Man with No Name trilogy) and was popular throughout the late 1960s and early 1970s.
The genre is defined by its conflict between traditional, conservative values and a more liberal approach to filmmaking. Usually set on the Southwestern plains or the desert (Old West), these films are often marked by their distinctive use of music, which includes extensive use of guitar solos and leitmotifs, hyper-realistic cinematography, almost operatic score, high production value, highly stylized sets, blood-splattered violence, and characters who are outcasts from society.
The main character is often a loner who is forced to fight or die whilst living by his own code of ethics.
Italian filmmakers such as Sergio Leone, Sergio Corbucci, Damiano Damiani, Giulio Petroni, Fernando di Leo and Tonino Valerii were instrumental in developing this genre.
