The pH of the eye or the pH of the tears is slightly alkaline. Most of the soaps we get in the market are also alkaline, but remember that they are highly alkaline. So if soap gets inside the eye, then it can cause damage to the eye, the most important thing here is how much of soap has goes inside and how long has it been there. So if soap gets inside the eye, start washing it immediately so that we can remove it or dilute it. If there is a piece like of soap that is lying inside the eye, then pull it put as this cannot be washed out completely as they remain in the fornices and cause permanent damage to the eye. The wash should be continued for atleast 15 to 20 minutes even if the irritation is less. Remember that these are alkaline soaps. So the amount of pain it causes is less. Usually acid causes more pain, alkaline causes less pain. But alkali causes more damage to the eye because they penetrate more faster. So don’t be fooled by the amount of pain you have. Make sure to wash the eye thoroughly. Wash is the most important thing and approach the nearest ophthalmologist or eye doctor immediately.
