There are several methods that can be used to cut a tapered cone on an engineer's metal lathe. For turning long objects with shallow angles the tailstock offset method is used. In this example we are making a number 3 morse taper on a long shaft.
This video describes how to calculate the tailstock offset required to cut a taper and shows the taper being cut.

You specify what taper you require and it calculates the offset. Diagrams are provided. It also includes tables for various kinds of standard tapers such as Morse tapers.
