What's the difference between a plastic surgeon and cosmetic surgeon? | Aesthetic Surgical Images
One of the most important decisions facing patients who are considering cosmetic surgery is the choice of surgeon. For many patients the terms cosmetic surgery and plastic surgery are extremely confusing. These terms are, often times, used interchangeably. There are significant differences between a cosmetic surgeon and a plastic surgeon. A plastic surgeon is someone who's done a residency in plastic and reconstructive surgery. This residency can take upwards of seven to eight years to complete. It's followed by board certification; which requires testing and appropriate certification.
In contrast, cosmetic surgery by performed by someone who performs cosmetic surgery. This can be a plastic surgeon, but it can also be a otolaryngologist, an oral surgeon, an ophthalmologist, a dermatologist, and even a gynecologist. In our community, we even have emergency room physicians and family doctors who call themselves cosmetic surgeons. In this situation, not only did these physicians not only have basic surgical training, but they don't have specialty surgical training.
At this point it's very important that you understand the credentials of the person who's going to perform your cosmetic surgery. The bar is relatively high for someone to call themselves a plastic surgeon, but anyone can call themselves a cosmetic surgeon. For this reason it's important that you do your homework, so that you know that the person who's doing your surgery has all the appropriate credentials. This the most important decision that you will make. The choice of your surgeon has significant implications for your safety and your surgical result.
