Russians storm police station held by militants
Russian soldiers backed by tanks and heavily-armoured vehicles on
Monday (21/8) stormed a police station taken by around 200 Chechen
fighters on Sunday. Heavy artillery and helicopter gunships were
also used in the assault in the city of Argun, 15 kilometres
(9 miles) east of Grozny. The incident highlights the
fast-deteriorating nature of the fragile peace effort in
Chechnya. Earlier the Organization for Security and Cooperation
in Europe's representative in breakaway Chechnya met the leader of
the Chechen rebels to negotiate the release of four hostages his
men were holding. The meeting between the OSCE's Sandor Meszaros
and rebel leader Alaudi Khamzatov took place late on Monday (21/8)
as Russian helicopters circled overhead. The Chechen fighters had
threatened to give the Russian people "suitcases of victims"
unless the assault on Chechnya is ended. They were armed with
grenade launchers, a flamethrower and firearms.
