This month we zoom in on the Grand Cru village of Verzy which is based in the region of Montagne de Reims which is well-regarded for it's mineral-driven Pinot noir. There are 17 villages included in the Grand Cru Classification. They are: Ambonnay, Aÿ, Beaumont sur Vesle, Bouzy, Louvois, Mailly Champagne, Puisieux, Sillery, Tours sur Marne, Verzenay and Verzy for Pinot noir and Avize, Chouilly, Cramant, Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, Oger & Oiry for Chardonnay.
We chose two producers from this village to highlight how different two champagnes can be.
First up is fifth Generation Grower @SadiMalot (based in the Premier Cru Village of Villers-Mamery) and owns plots on Verzy as well. Their brand new 'parcellaire' range or single vineyard range, has a Blanc de Noirs called 'Les Goisses' and is fermented entirely without oak and is the younger of the two. They also have a Blanc de Blancs alled 'Les Suzaines' and a Rosé de Saignée. See the full range here
Our second producer is @Juillet-Lallement based in Verzy itself and although they have just 4 hectares of land, they have vines dating back to 1949 which are still used in prodcution today. We feature the jewel of the house'La Belle de Juillet' - a 100% pinot noir from Verzy fermented and aged entirely in oak,
There is a huge difference between these wines with the former being quite easy to drink as it's young, vibrant and fresh and the JL needs some time open, is more mature in it's profile and definitely needs food.
