This is a recording of my All Clear run of Rayforce - the Japanese arcade version of the game known as Layer Section on the Sega Saturn - from shmupsforum's STGT 2008, scoring a total of 5.60mil.
A technological tour-de-force of the Taito F3 System, Rayforce was a visual and audio masterpiece, ahead of its time. It was a hard-as-nails vertical scrolling shooter as well, with many difficult traps and challenging bosses throughout. Scoring was based on your lock-on lasers, with bonus points increasing the more lock-on kills you gained at once. You gained more bonus points for smart lock-on usage however, with the big points coming from destroying larger enemies with your 8th lock-on laser, so stages became a merry dance around the screen, trying to tag the largest on-screen enemy with your last available lock before firing.
A number of stupid and avoidable deaths throughout this credit, but managed to hold it together enough to finish off the last boss at speed. A fully optimised run for me would be close to or over the 6mil mark.
Game played and input recorded in WolfMAME 0.106. Video footage recorded using an iPhone 4, and audio normalised in iMovie.
