Recovering from depression is not a linear or simple process. Getting better from depression means that you will likely experience ups and downs in the recovery process and there are four common pitfalls or traps that can occur during the depression recovery process. There are two traps that are associated with mood drops during recovery from depression and two traps associated with improving mood during the depression recovery process. The two traps associated with drops in mood during depression recovery are catastrophizing (e.g., seeing a drop on mood as a sign that the depression is coming back) and trying to come up with theories upon theories to explain the drop in mood. The two traps that are associated with rising mood in depression recovery are trying to test the strength of your recovery from depression and allowing enthusiasm to get out of control, resulting in you setting bigger goals and expectations than you can achieve.
By understanding these four pitfalls and traps in the depression recovery process, you can recognize earlies on when you are falling into these traps and make a correction earlier on in the process. As long as you recognize these depression pitfalls, you can do something about them, either preventing them or getting out of them faster,
